    Marking in the Packaging Industry

Matthews offers more ways to code, bar code and identify your products than any other single supplier, from imprint packaging type to complete turnkey ink-jet systems. When choosing a code system that meets your needs, there are many factors to consider, including character size, number of lines, print speed and substrate.

The following are a few Matthews products and the applications they provide solutions for:

Ink-Jet Coding, Small & Large Character
Imprint Packaging Type
Offset Printing for Web Applications

InkJet Coding

Reliable Small Character Coding

Matthews Continuous Ink-Jet Systems print a variety of small character codes on food, beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical packages. Several models are available to produce near-letter quality print of characters ranging from 1/32" to 3/4". Other print features include multi-line printing, sharp logos and scannable bar codes.

Large Character Coding on Shrink Wrap,
Tray Packs, Kraft Bags, Corrugated and more

Our Jet-A-Mark® Drop-On-Demand Ink-Jet Printers code variable information, logos and alphanumeric text on a variety of packaging materials including plastics, corrugated, kraft and metal. Five different models are available for printing character sizes from 3/16" up to 5" with speeds up to 788 fpm. The advantages of the Jet-A-Mark line of printers are the wide variety of inks, rugged printheads and interfacing capabilities.

Innovative Water-Based Ink System - J.A.W.S.™
Messy and tedious ink changeover, multiple ink delivery systems, high shipping costs? If this reflects your current large character-inking situation, then you need to take a look at J.A.W.S (Just Add Water Supply). Designed for large character drop-on-demand printers, J.A.W.S. uses a water-based ink concentrate that is mixed with tap water at your plant to supply ink for up to 20 printheads.

High Speed Coding With Laser Systems

Matthews laser systems offer you a flexible & economic solution to a wide variety of standard marking requirements. These systems perform consistent and permanent marking with no requirement for expensive consumables and next to no maintenance.

Readable Bar Codes Printed Onto Corrugated Shipping Cartons
For in-line bar coding on corrugated cases, the IP9000 proves to be the perfect solution. This high-resolution ink-jet coder prints scannable bar codes, sharp graphics and alphanumeric text to enhance your products and packages. The IP9000 offers complete printing flexibility with three printhead styles, multi-line printing, character sizes from 5/64" to 1-7/8" and speeds up to 980 fpm.

Imprint Packaging Type

Sprint Packaging Type and Holders
Often incorporated as a part of other packaging equipment such as form, fill and seal and cartoning, steel packaging type leaves a legible, permanent mark on chipboard, metals, plastics, tapes and other packaging materials. It's an inexpensive marking method that doesn't require inks, hazardous waste disposal or skilled technicians.

Plastic Heat Branding without Ink
Coding on plastic packaging materials is easy and economical with heat branding indenting units. Two systems, the Heat-A-Mark™ and the Heat-Set, heat type and indent a branded code into plastic and vinyl packaging material. The Heat-A-Mark marks round plastic bottles or containers, while the Heat-Set is designed for flat parts.

Contact Printing

Simple Contact Coding System
For intermittent coding operations, the Contact Coder prints logos, product codes, expiration dates and other product information on boxes, bottles, cans, bags and more. The unit features a gentletouch printhead that does not distort the rubber type for clear, crisp codes. It can be integrated easily with other packaging equipment or can be set-up as a stand-alone, package marking station.

Industrial Offset Printing for Web Applications
Print-A-Mark™ Offset Printers can print on continuous webs such as shrink-wrap, laminates and other packaging materials. With offset printing you'll receive high quality, multi-line printing at an economical price. Special plastic marking inks are available for printing on untreated polyethylene materials.
