HOLJERON AND MATTHEWS AT NA08:
NEW LOW PRESSURE ACCUMULATION AND UNIVERSAL MICROROLLER CONTROL MODULES REDUCE ENERGY AND OTHER COSTS ON CONVEYOR SYSTEMS; THREE NEW MARKING SYSTEMS ALSO SHOWN

Universal Microroller Controller

Tualatin, OR, and Pittsburgh, PA, April 8, 2008 -- Two new energy-saving, cost-effective microprocessor-based controllers for conveyor systems -- a Low Pressure Accumulation Controller and a Universal Controller for powered rollers or mechanical brake rollers -- will be shown for the first time by Holjeron at the NA08 material handling show April 21-24 in booth #1420. Holjeron is the electronic controls subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based Matthews Marking Products.

Matthews is showing three new marking devices – the new low-maintenance I-Mark™ C84 continuous ink jet for small character marking, a newly expanded I-Mark™ SX32 low-cost drop-on-demand ink jet controller with double the memory of previous models, and the new I-Mark™ V84 drop-on-demand ink jet controller, capable of driving up to four printheads and featuring an easy-to-use large color touchscreen interface.

NEW customizable Low Pressure Accumulation (LPA) Controller

The just-announced LPA controller for 24 volt DC powered roller conveyors can be implemented for loads from as low as 5 lbs up to those weighing hundreds of pounds. Unlike many on the market, Holjeron’s LPA modules can be customized for a variety of applications, depending on weight, speed, size and material. Because they communicate the status of loads over off-the-shelf CAT 5/5E/6 patch cables, installation is much simpler and less costly than those using proprietary hardware.

LPA is a method of accumulating product on a conveyor system where items are allowed to stack up against each other. This makes for efficient use of conveyor space, especially for infeed lines. LPA is approximately 40% less costly than Zero Pressure Accumulation (where individual products on the conveyor do not touch) because sensors are not required to detect the presence or absence of product in a zone. In addition to the cost of sensors themselves, LPA also saves on the wiring costs for those sensors. Holjeron’s LPA modules detect the presence of product by sensing changes to the current going to the Microroller™ powered roller, and they stop the roller when a static load is detected.

NEW Universal Controller for both motor-driven and mechanical rollers

Holjeron’s new Universal Controller can drive standard motor driven rollers (MDRs) or mechanical brake rollers and can apply electronic braking to either. Normally, a different driver/control module is needed for each type of roller.

"Instead of having to buy two or more driver modules, it’s possible to use just one Universal Controller to drive all the powered rollers in a system,” explains John Mosher, Holjeron’s Solution Development Manager. This not only saves on equipment purchase, but also reduces spare parts inventory requirements and facilitates easy replacement.

Because Holjeron’s Universal Controller enables electronic braking for both types of rollers, it consumes significantly less energy. [Editor’s note: an electric solenoid is normally used to keep a mechanical brake off, so energy is constantly consumed. Electronic brakes on a standard powered roller, on the other hand, only use energy when the brake is applied.]

The LPA Control Module and Universal Controller are the latest additions to Holjeron’s ZoneLink™ family of control modules and subsystems, which feature advanced control capabilities and diagnostic features, as well as being the easiest to install and configure, resulting in the lowest installed cost. According to Mosher: “24 volt DC motor driven roller conveyor systems offer important benefits over AC driven live roller or belt conveyor systems: they consume far less energy, are safer, quieter and easier to configure and maintain”.

NEW I-Mark™ C84 Continuous Ink-Jet small character marking system – easy to use, low maintenance

I-Mark C84
Matthews new C84 continuous ink-jet (CIJ) system prints up to 4 lines of characters from .05 in -.61 in. (1.25 mm-15.6 mm) high at a maximum speed of 1,235 ft. per minute (376 m/min.). It may be used with fast-dry, non-MEK and pigmented inks to print expiration dates, batch codes, logos and bar codes on products of any shape, on porous or non-porous surfaces. Ideal for cosmetic, snackfood, pharmaceutical, electronic and other applications, the new printer is manufactured in the U.S.

The C84’s large, easy-to-read, color, icon-based touchscreen (10.4 in.) and single button controls for jet startup/shutdown make it simple to operate and to create and change messages. This printer features a self-cleaning printhead. Regular maintenance is only required after 2,500 hours of operation, in comparison to the usual 1,500 hours of competing CIJ printers.

NEWLY EXPANDED I-Mark™ SX32e drop-on-demand ink jet controller – affordability and double the memory

I-Mark SX32
Matthews easy-to-use, low cost SX32e drop-on-demand printer has double the memory of its original design, so that it now can store 200 messages. Used to print high-quality graphics, logos and datecodes from 0.09 in. to 5 in. high, the SX32e has additional date code formats and counters, which allow operators to use custom date or batch code formats.

NEW I-Mark™ V84 drop-on-demand ink jet controller – for independent control of up to 4 printheads
I-Mark V84
Ideal for printing 4-5 lines of text, graphics/logos, and bar codes for industrial and packaging applications, the new V84 controller features an easy-to-use 10.4 inch color touchscreen interface. The V84 provides independent control of printing attributes for 1-4 printheads for maximum flexibility - either standard ones or Matthews’ new low ink-consumption, high-resolution 8000 Series DOD printheads, which last five times longer than other DOD printheads. Maximum print speed is 680 fpm (feet per minute) and characters may be from 3/32 in. (2.38mm) to 5 in. (127 mm) high, depending on the printheads used.

Holjeron designs and manufactures control devices and subsystems for OEMS and major end users in the material handling, petrochemical, semiconductor and homeland security industries. Matthews Marking Products is a division of the Brand Solutions group of Matthews International Corporation.
