New From Matthews International at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2005: VOC-Free InkJet Ink, High-Speed Printer For Plastic Film Marking, Motor-Driven Rollers From Holjeron For Conveyors and NEMA4 InkJet Printhead

Pittsburgh, PA, July 1, 2005 – Matthews International Marking Products Division will be showing new products in several categories at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2005: a new VOC-free acetone ink for ink-jet printers; a new high-speed thermal transfer printer – available with IP65-rated enclosure -- for marking plastic film; Microroller® motorized rollers for conveyor systems (due to recent acquisition of Sparks by Matthews) available from Matthews’ Holjeron electronic controls subsidiary; and a NEMA 4/IP65-rated printhead for drop-on-demand (DOD) ink-jet printers. Matthews and Holjeron will be exhibiting together in booth #C-4118 at the Las Vegas Convention Center September 26-28.

First VOC-free ink for ink-jet printers

The new SCP-901A acetone ink is Matthews’ first VOC-free ink for its Jet-A-Mark® line of ink-jet printers. The company has long offered VOC-free ink for contact printers. UV-resistant and fast-drying, the acetone ink is ideal for marking on a wide variety of substrates, including wood, metals and plastic.

Swing printer for fast, high-quality marking on plastic film

Available in intermittent and continuous motion models, Matthews’ new Swing thermal transfer printer offers high-quality (up to 300 dpi) marking, with instant dry time, directly on plastic packaging film or other smooth surfaces, such as rubber. The Swing printer offers the highest speed in the thermal transfer category – up to 196 ft/min.

Applications include plasma bags, lidding stock for syringes or pharmaceutical blisterpacks. An IP65-rated enclosure is available for wet environments.

Bar codes, date/lot codes, logos and other messages may be input and changed quickly and easily – using the built-in keyboard, optional floppy drive or standard labeling software or Easycode software from Matthews.

Motor-driven rollers for advanced conveyor applications

Matthews recently acquired the Microroller® motor-driven roller technology of Sparks Belting Company and assigned management and marketing to its electronic controls subsidiary, Holjeron (Tualatin, OR). [See press release June 27, 2005]

This acquisition enables Holjeron, known for its advanced conveyor control systems, to sell not only the controls but also the powered rollers themselves. With all the technology in-house, Holjeron expects to develop further innovations in integrated powered roller conveyor systems, particularly useful for accumulation applications. The acquisition will also enable Matthews to develop new turnkey marking products with enhanced control, traceability, and material handling.

Water-resistant IP65 printhead

Meeting NEMA 4 standards and developed for food processing applications, Matthews IP 65 printhead (shown first at Pack Expo 2004) has a small profile (less than 5.2 in. front to back), making it easy to fit on packaging equipment. Each IP 65 is a 7-valve MINI drop printhead for printing a single line at speeds up to 300 fpm; multiple lines may be printed by stacking several printheads. Character sizes range from 0.10” to 1.10”. The stainless steel IP 65 is the only printhead on the market for DOD ink-jet printers used in wet, tough environments such as food packaging.
