Matthews Acquires Sparks' Motor-Driven Controller Technology for Advanced Conveyor Applications; Product to be Marketed by Holjeron Subsidiary

Pittsburgh PA, June 27, 2005 – Matthews International has acquired the Microroller® motor-driven roller technology of Sparks Belting Company and assigned management and marketing to its Holjeron subsidiary (Tualatin, OR), according to an announcement by Brian Dunn, President of the manufacturer of a diversified line of advanced marking systems.

This acquisition enables Holjeron, known for its advanced conveyor control systems, to sell not only the controls but also the powered rollers themselves. With all the technology inhouse, Holjeron expects to develop further innovations in integrated powered roller conveyor systems, particularly useful for accumulation applications, notes Dunn. This acquisition will also enable Matthews to develop new turnkey marking products with enhanced control, traceability, and material handling.

Advantages of motor-driven rollers

Motor-driven rollers provide better control than traditional line shaft conveyor systems. In addition, they operate at efficiencies of more than 90% and can be easily adjusted to speeds of 300 feet per minute, as well as 100 feet per minute. Dunn indicated that motor-driven rollers are also virtually free of maintenance and can be easily replaced. Because of these advantages powered rollers are expected to play a growing role in modern conveyor systems.

Dunn explained that the new technology would now be added to Holjeron’s ZoneLink™ advanced technology for connecting powered roller control zones in conveyor applications. This control architecture reduces the need for field wiring, cabling costs and installation time, as well as system programming. He added that the company’s mission is now to pursue the integration of motor-driven rollers into conventional conveyor applications.

Holjeron is now assembling and shipping orders for Microrollers® to customers with powered motorized conveyors. Chris Taylor, Business Unit Manager at Sparks, will provide field marketing assistance as Holjeron’s new Business Development Manager.
